1+1=2

That is the creepiest thing I know. It is undebatable, unchallenged and inexplicable. It just is. Mathematics is creepy. there is something alien and inhuman about equations, formulas and numbers. Creepier than even the holocaust, rotting flesh and strange sounds in the night. The ancient Greeks thought numbers were sacred and worshipped formulas. Physicists and scientists use formulas to explain the universe. Mathematics is just about the only thing that withstood the test of time. Civilisations rise and fall. Leaders come and go. People live and die. Tides come in and out. But 1+1=2 was true in 2005B.C as it is today in yr 2005. there is something strange about maths. Why do the 3 angles of a triangle always add up to 180? without exception. UNbending yet without any good explanation. Is it possible that mathematics form some fundamental truth/limitations about our universe? Either it is indeed some kind of rock bottom truth of the universe. Or it is the rock bottom limitation of human mind. Maybe mathematics is merely a by-product of our limited mental and sensory capability.

But equally freaky is 1-1=0. When we were all young. Analogy was made to bring this concept across. 'You have 1 apple, I take that apple away. You are left with 0 apples." easy enough to understand until negative numbers arrive and everything is thrown into chaos. 0 cannot now mean nothing, because there are things even less than 0. And all kids know that there cannot be anything less than nothing. Maybe we are all unable to truly grasp the concept of 'Nothing'. When I learnt that the biggest and the smallest numbers stretch on infinitely. It was so strange, my mind closed up forever towards maths. If looked at it in this way, then maybe mathematics is not a limitation, but a possible view of the universe that escapes the confines of human common sense. Perhaps, a reach for things beyond what our mind can conceive. But then again, isn't it silly that we kind of play a game where the rules are self created? What if 0 actually is -10000000000? But there are no such ridiculous what ifs. 1+1=2 and that's the way it will always be. till maybe the sun burns out?
